Quotes from playtesters:
"This game was an absolute blast! I'm ready to play again immediately!"
"Jukebox is perfect for when you and your musical theater friends want to do karaoke without annoying a bar full of strangers. It's also perfect for anyone who wants an excuse to sing silly songs and tell stories with their friends!!! The TTRPG space has been needing a game like this."
"I was so lucky I got to play [Jukebox] at Big Bad Con 2022. When someone asks me about my highlight games at the con, this is the first thing I talk about. It was a stellar experience I plan to take to friends new and old."
"We did a musical about a ballet school and one of our characters got dragged to hell…Everyone in our group had a really fun time and said they'd love to play it again."
"We ended up doing a heist with a lot of Steely Dan songs in it. The mechanics for introducing complications really helped move the action forward. It had a very cinematic feel of cutting between different groupings of the characters doing different heist things. Everyone had a really good time!"

Gameplay
All you need to play Jukebox are:
- A few pencils
- Index cards
- A deck of playing cards
- A computer or TV with a sound system and a connection to the internet (or a karaoke machine)
Jukebox takes inspiration from story games like Follow, Downfall, Fiasco, and Ribbon Drive, but adds a karaoke singing mechanic. A summary of play is below.
During the Opening Number everyone sings a group karaoke song together, then collaboratively builds the world and picks a group goal the characters seek to achieve.
In Act One each player introduces their characters by singing a character solo. This conveys who they are and what they want, while also hinting at some drama they must resolve – a personal flaw, an old enemy, a sticky situation – before the end of the story.
In Act Two the plot progresses in story scenes. Players ask questions about what happens next and draw songs from their karaoke set lists to see where the story goes.
In Act Three characters determine whether they successfully resolve their drama or succumb to it. Their success is determined by the luck of the draw but is swayed by earlier events in the story.
In the Finale, all characters sing a last song together. Then, depending on chance, what the players wish for their characters, and how successfully the group resolved their challenges, you find out the ending.

Hello! I played this with my brother a few months ago and absolutely adore it! I did hack the game to add another act 2 since it was just me and him but that worked surprisingly well. We played with the Twisted Fairy-tales preset and I expected a story that really got to poke a tropes. And while we kind of did that, We ended up making a buddy musical about two background characters in another person's story trying to make their own adventure for themselves. It had betrayals, twists, an excellent villain, and tons of characterization. I'd super recommend the game to anyone that loves making stories and definitely to fans and actors of theater.
My Play-through Summary:
One, a selfish and nice but socially closed off (in making close friends) bartender named Al C'haul, and the other a fox that makes plans to convoluted to ever be seen as competent or powerful named Vixen. The two started of hating each other. But after, Vixen tricks and convinces Al to join him to get the wishing star. Secretly though, he wants to use Al to get the star himself so Vixen can wish to never get caught. And the two set off.
Although Vixen finds out earlier that the king is actively being overthrown by the jester, Fantouche. The two get captured on their way to where the star will appear (above the castle) but get found by Fantouche and sent to the dungeon. They break out by using Pinocchio's nose (since he was also sent to the dungeon). Al sees that multiple citizens got captured. He even recognizes a bunch of them since they frequent his bar. But some let slip on Vixen's plan to trick Al. Al turns on vixen and marches up to Fantouche with the freed townsfolk to knock Fantouche off the throne.
But in the process, the king dies by the jester's hands. So Al gets a bit power hungry and demands a reward. The townsfolk, now a crowd, cheer on Al and see him as more worthy to care for the lower-class people, being an average Joe. Vixen gets kicked out of the kingdom by Al for what he calls treason. Though secretly, vixen is able to sneak to the star...but I don't remember what he wished for. I'll update this comment if I can ask my brother what it was. Sorry to leave on a cliffhanger.
This game was honestly so fire, its structure led to some really good development, and we ended up making a musical that was more serious than I thought we would make. Very fun, would play again.
Thank you for taking the time to write this! Comments and play through stories like these seriously make my day and it's cool to hear y'all did a serious musical!
I haven't actually played the game yet (hopefully soon) but I bought a physical copy from a local-ish game store, and I just want to say that I adore the concept of combining karaoke/music with RPGs <3
I'm so glad to hear you found it (somewhat) locally and thank so much for the comment! Jukebox is the culmination of a few years of working and playtesting that concept, and I hope you enjoy it!
I have gotten to play it once since my initial comment and let me tell you: I loved it! I REALLY like how generally unrelated bits of music can spark such a fun and still coherent story with a bit of imagination. (Our opening number was Gimme Gimme Gimme by ABBA, our group goal was to "find the man after midnight", and while the story progressed, one character turned out to be more genderfluid than expected thanks to a song from the Mulan (the animated Disney movie), a kraken (literally) crashed a fancy ballroom party we were invited to, and in the end all main characters and the man we were looking for kind of ended up in a polycule because of a surprisingly fitting combination of songs and cards in Act 3)
<3 that absolutely sounds like a Jukebox game and a blast. I've definitely played a game where "Be a Man" really set the tone :)!
Super cool game, Jar of Eyes team!
Glad you like it and thank you for the note!
Hi, I'm Jack from MS Edizioni, an Italian RPG publisher.
I was wondering if you might be interested in discussing a possible Italian localization of Juke Box.
I just got my copy of Jukebox in the mail, and I'm so excited, I love everything about this! I did want to ask, is there a policy or any way you'd prefer people making/releasing or selling their own Playsets for Jukebox (with clear attribution, of course)? I'd love to try to make a Mountain Goats themed one!
The short answer is YES, absolutely make playsets. Also when I got ping'd about this comment, I was right next to two friends who are huge Mountain Goats fans :)!
It's on my TODO to eventually have a license similar to the "Powered by Lesbians" license for Thirsty Sword Lesbians: https://poweredbylesbians.com/license/ - Basically, please provide attribution back to this itch.io page (and I can work to come up with language for that), but otherwise feel free to publish or even sell your own playsets.
I might even be able to help you get it into the official template; if that's of interest, reach out to jarofeyesgames@gmail.com.
Amazing, thanks so much!! Very excited to throw this together!
Hello. I just purchased a physical+digital bundle of this game from Plus One EXP and was kind of dismayed that it didn't include PDFs for any of the playbills (and the PDF of the game seems to be a layout pass?) Is there anyway I can access these without making a second purchase
Hi Pikliz - thank you for grabbing Jukebox and sorry about the dismay - please send me an email at jarofeyesgames@gmail.com and I'll get you sorted out with the playbill pdfs. I'm working out what's going on with the playbills with Plus One Exp!
hi, will version 2 of the game be available to people who purchase the current version or will it be a separate purchase?
Hi Antidiss! Your comment and purchase got me to do an update I intended to do a few weeks ago, which was to share what's complete of version 2 with itch customers.
That's a long way of saying yes! If you purchased version 1 or Kickstarted version 2, you will be getting PDF copies of version 2. There is no need to purchase anything twice. Thank you for buying Jukebox!
played this game at big bad con and had a absolute blast. This was fun dramatic, funny and one of the highlights of my con. Highly recommend this game.
I enjoyed playing this game with two of my friends. I'm not even a seasoned karaoke player, but belting out epic songs in the context of playing a bigger game was really fun! Using songs to demonstrate and solve problems related to the characters we were playing was unique and innovative.
